France Gives Green Light to New Gambling Law

The French government voted 299 to 233 in favor of a new set of laws that will govern the country’s gambling landscape. The parliament passed the law in its original version that was approved by the country’s Senate in February. “This bill allows for the regulated opening of the market for online gaming by authorising operators who respect the strict requirements,” said Francois Baroin, the French Budget Minister. “The government's objective remains to be ready for the start of the FIFA World Cup in June and everything will be implemented to meet that goal.”

While the new legislation was warmly welcomed by groups such as the French Football Federation and the French Olympic Committee, these feelings were not shared by organizations such as the Remote Gambling Authory. “Even if the European Commission, as guardian of the Treaties, feels that a licensing system is sufficient to satisfy EU rules, the French law makes a mockery of a supposed ‘controlled opening’,” said Clive Hawkswood, Chief Executive of the RGA. “Whether it is the hundred plus pages of technical rules, the false limitation on payouts to players, the ineffective blocking mechanisms or the introduction of an unsubstantiated sports right, this system is, unfortunately, seriously flawed and will make it difficult for any private sector company to be successful, especially in the area of sports betting.”

Lithuania Recognizes Poker as a Sport

The Baltic state of Lithuania has taken an important step by declaring that the game of poker is officially recognized in the country as a sport. Until now, poker was limited to the twelve casinos that serve the country’s 3.3 million citizens, however, with its new status, the game of poker can be played outside the casinos as long as it is used for non-commercial purposes.

The Lithuanian government made an official announcement regarding its decision on the Physical Education website last week. The President for the Lithuanian Sports Poker Federation, Andrius Tapinas welcomed the news and said that it was a step in the right direction. “This is an extremely important step in our work,” he said. “We are receiving congratulations from many of our colleagues abroad and I know that we are breaking thick ice with our progress for similar international initiatives.”

There is expected to be a huge number of poker tournaments planned in the country following the announcement, the first being an inaugral event in Vilnius from April 24 to 26.
