Online Gambling Up in Australia

A recent report by the Australian research group, Roy Morgan Research, has shown that online gambling is on the rise Down Under. According to the research group, online gambling, which incorporates online sports betting, saw a phenomenal growth from $928 million in 2010 to over $1.1 billion in the year leading up to September 2012. Australians are huge sports betting fans and spend billions supporting their favorite teams by betting on their success at the many bookmaker sites which serve the Australian gambling market.

With the growth of online betting – and perhaps because of it – also saw a decline in land based gambling revenues in Australia. The Roy Morgan Research report showed that land gambling generated $16.9 billion in the same time period up to September 2012, a severe drop from the $20 billion reported in 2010. Poker machines, or pokies as they’re known in Australia, accounted for $10.2 billion of that number, a $1 billion drop from the year before.
