Gala Coral Sold to Rank

While Genting UK has always been the biggest casino operator in the United Kingdom, it has now shifted into second place after a deal was signed between the Rank Group and Gala Coral. The deal, worth over GBP 205 million, will see Rank take over all Gala Coral’s casinos, which include 23 casinos and 3 non-operating licenses. Should the UK authorities approve the sale and Rank’s shareholders vote in favor, the sale will go through in September this year.

The chairman and chief executive officer of Rank, Ian Burke, said about the transaction, "We are delighted to have agreed terms with Gala Coral. This acquisition will deliver a step change in Rank‘s earnings by capitalising on our proven record of operational excellence in the British casino sector and will be earnings enhancing in the first full year of ownership. By rolling out the 'G Casino' format into the Gala estate and expanding the Grosvenor Casino brand into 11 new cities, we will accelerate the growing awareness of the brand and support the development of a multi-channel gaming business.”

The plan is to rebrand all Gala casinos as Grosvenor Casinos, bringing Rank’s total number of casinos in the UK to 58 operating venues and 13 non operating licenses.

Advancements in Full Tilt Poker Takeover

According to reports, employees at the Dublin headquarters of Full Tilt Poker were told that the online poker site will definitely be taken over by Poker Stars. They were told that a final bid by Laurent Tapie of the French investment firm, Groupe Tapie was officially rejected and that they would soon be employees of the Isle of Man based Poker Stars, once considered their chief rivals.

It was also reported that the day after Poker Stars entered into talks to buy over Full Tilt Poker, Tapie contacted staff and invited them to join him in Paris and join him in launching a new online poker group.

At the eleventh hour, a deal that was supposed to see Groupe Bernard Tapie acquire Full Tilt Poker, fell through after the US Department of Justice placed unreasonable demands on the French group. The DOJ demanded that US players be reimbursed immediately for the funds that have been locked up in the poker room since Black Friday in April last year.
