Gambling Organizations File Complaint Against Greek Government
Two online gambling groups, the Remote Gambling Association and the European Gaming and Betting Association, have filed a complaint with the European Commission against the Greek government’s protectionist policies in its online gambling industry. Both RGA and EGBA have taken up the issue about Greece extending the existing monopoly of OPAP on online gambling in the market. In their joint complaint, the groups said that Greece has thus far “failed to begin licensing online gambling operators”, which formed a central measure of the new gambling laws introduced in the country last year.
“Instead,” say the groups in their complaint, “the Greek government has decided to grant OPAP, the incumbent monopoly gambling operator for offline games, an extension of its license for ten more years from 2020 to 2030 and also to extend the monopoly to include online gambling.”
The groups claim that the process has shown a “disdain for European law” and has been “wholly non-transparent”. RGA and EGBA said that they trusted that the Commissioner would urgently investigate their complaint and take action accordingly against Greece, as well as several other pending complaints. The groups feel that the Greek government is blocking major European operators from its market and steps should be taken to put an end to this.
